Rachael Butcher

Before coming to Oxford Brookes to take the GDL, Rachael Butcher completed her BA at the American University of Paris, and her LLM at Maastricht University. Rachael is one of the student co-ordinators of Brookes’ pro bono scheme, with a particular interest in Amicus, a charity assisting lawyers for justice on death row.

I am a co-ordinator for the Cafcass and Mediation Service pro bono projects, as well as being one of the university’s overall pro bono coordinators. I am also the Student Reporter and am on the GDL Social Committee.

I completed an undergraduate degree in Modern History and Politics at Oxford, and I wanted to remain in Oxford for an extra year. I knew a number of people who had moved from Oxford University to study the GDL at Brookes the previous year and had heard positive comments about the course from them.

Before coming to Oxford Brookes, I studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Durham University. I was attracted by the challenge of the Brookes GDL where there is a more academic approach rather than being simply taught for the exam. This allows a greater depth of understanding than elsewhere and whilst the year is challenging it is also highly rewarding.

I always thought I would study and have a career in law, but when it came to choosing my undergraduate university course I wanted to take the opportunity to read something different before my legal studies began. I did my research and found that I had a number of postgraduate law courses available to me, including the LLB Legal Practice – a two year course comprising the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and the Legal Practice Course (LPC). I think that combining the two diplomas into an LLB is more attractive to future employers, and better reflects the work that goes in to the two years.
